The science of cleaning coins

Coins soaking in vinegar and salt

One of the daycare moms shared an activity that interested all of us: cleaning coins.

  1. Find coins (a hunt in itself!)
  2. Sort the coins into type (optional)
  3. Stir 1/4 cup vinegar and 1 tsp of salt until the salt dissolves
  4. In a small container add a few coins, ideally not overlapping, and possibly of the same variety/metal.
  5. Some will clean themselves pretty quickly, others may require a discarded toothbrush.
  6. Don't let them soak more than 5 or 10 minutes or they will discolor again (we left ours in for an hour, so they're not pretty!).
  7. Rinse in water and dry.
Now I want to know, can I use the same solution to clean my jewelry?
